FAQs
What is marabou made from?
Marabou is a type of feather that comes from young turkeys, and is commonly used for fly tying. Marabou is soft, downy, and fluffy making it the perfect material for tying realistic flies.
Can I use synthetic materials for fly tying?
Yes. However, we recommend using natural materials and fibres. While synthetic materials can be used, they are unable to achieve the same lifelike feel and texture that natural materials produce. The way natural materials move through water cannot be replicated, and some even say that fish prefer flies made of natural fibres.
What kind of feathers are best for fly tying?
Assuming you’ve already picked up some marabou, it’s a good idea to also buy a peacock and pheasant tail feather. These are commonly used in a number of fly tying patterns, making them a versatile choice.
