West Central Alberta’s Current Water Conditions & Fly Fishing Report
The upper Red Deer flows are currently on the lower end of the seasonal average and water conditions have been excellent! With bug life starting to pick back up again. We have been seeing caddis, mayfly’s and the odd stonefly kicking around! However, nymphing and streamers have been fishing great as well! The upper tributary’s flows are continuing to drop and water temperatures have been heating up. Morning fishing has been best as the rivers start to heat up with the afternoon sun. Bug life has been plentiful with caddis, drakes and stones being most active. Dry flies and nymphing have been doing well daily.
Conditions on the tail water sections of the Red Deer have been excellent.! Water temperatures have been starting to warm up and we have found the morning time most effective! The dry fly activity has been extremely active with lots of hatch’s coming off. The lower tributaries much Like the upper are continuing to drop in flow and have been heating up threw out the day. We have been seeing lots of caddis hatching as well as pale morning duns.
Local Stillwater’s are continuing to experience high water temperatures. Mayflies and caddis have been present however with the heat fishing has been best at deeper depths and dry fly activity has been hit or miss!
On the western streams bug life has been excellent and the flows continue to drop but water temperature has not been an issue. Conditions have been epic, and most streams are fishing well. As of 4:30pm on Wednesday a fire is burning close to head waters of the Ram and man areas and campgrounds are closed. However, conditions on the lower Ram are excellent and the fishing has been great.
