West Central Alberta’s Current Water Conditions & Fly Fishing Report
On the upper Red Deer River this week, flows have been excellent. Visibility has been good, and temperatures have been ideal. Surface action has been hit or miss but nymphing and streamers have been getting great results! The upper tributaries are flowing well, and water visibility has been great! The cooler nights have been keeping the water temperatures down, but it still doesn’t hurt to spot check temps when angling on warmer days! Dry fly fishing has been productive, but hatches have slowed down a bit. Attractor dry fly patterns and foam patterns have been fishing well.
On the tail water section of the Red Deer River water conditions have been excellent with lots of caddis present and we have also seen a few hoppers hit the water as well! Fishing Big foam patterns and nymphing have been very productive! On the lower tributaries flows are low. Water temperatures have been on the higher side. There have been lots of caddis as well as some hoppers on the water. Fishing hopper patterns with droppers as well as caddis have been fishing best with the odd streamer eater! Mornings and evenings have been the most active times.
On the local Stillwater’s this week temperatures have been still a bit on the higher side. Fishing leech patterns and chironomid patterns at deeper depths have given the best results. With water temperatures on the higher side, we have found the early mornings and evenings to be fishing best.
In the West Country many of our mountain streams are fishing well. Sporadic storms and rain fall over the last week have made stream conditions hit and miss but generally it has been productive and fishing well. Overnight and early morning temps are starting to dip a little lower and it’s taking a longer in the mornings to get those daytime water temps back up.
